Innovating in Complex Systems – Innovation Skills for Healthcare professionals (08:21)

This session will introduce good practice when developing new solutions or improvements in complex, sometimes risk-adverse, environments like healthcare. It will cover what all innovative initiatives need to succeed, including:

Defining what is the problem you are trying to solve.

• Involving the right people at the right time.

• Developing solutions that are suitable for the impact you need to deliver and constraints you operate within, wanted by patients/staff/other stakeholders, financially viable to deliver.

The session will also introduce tools healthcare innovators can use to scope and validate solutions in collaboration with stakeholders inside and outside of the NHS to ensure that solutions deliver needed impact to secure the support necessary to advance. The session will provide interactive break-out sessions during which attendees will be supported in applying these tools and approaches to their own work. Following the session attendees should be able to:

• Understand core elements of innovation and what new solutions or initiatives need to succeed.

• Understand barriers to innovation and how to work with and around these.

• Apply toolkits to support collaborative and interdisciplinary innovation activity.
