Petabytes of images are held in hospital PACS storage, but making use of this invaluable resource for academic research can be challenging. This talk gives some historical context and technical insights about how the PACS and the DICOM standards have evolved over four decades, then describes experience bridging this gap in the Scottish Medical Imaging project and recent Covid work, enabling academic research while protecting patient privacy.
